On April 24, 2005, Richard dipped his paddle into the Yellow river near Lawrenceville, GA, firing up the inspiration of not only those he met along the way, but of those, like myself, who heard about his story much later.
That first paddle stroke in 45F water, marked the beginning of his 512 Mile, solo kayaking trip down the Yellow, Altamaha and Ocmulgee rivers to the Atlantic Ocean.

The night of Lake Jocassee - II - Bears and Mt’s, Richard checked in with each of us to agree on a plan of action for the following day. As mentioned before, I’m not a true paddler as I don’t subscribe to the “A bad day on the river is better than ________” idea. I also don’t care to peel my potatoes twice, so given the choice of paddling on Lake Jocassee again or going home -we’re going home, unless, we paddle something else along the way. (more…)

The week before, we were in AL for the second opening of the Bartram River Trail. I learned never to use a bivvy-sack style ‘tent’ in Temperatures above 50F for fear of death by fungus/drowning in sweat. (more…)
