Hey Gerry, good to 'see' you again. I've been meaning to link to your folding kayak forum post...

Boy, I love BBQ! Thanks for the beta. I'll check 'em out and escalate it to Richard to factor into the plan -if they pass my 'true BBQ' test...

Looks good:

Twix n' Tween - Centerville
(297 Walnut Street, 35042 - 205 926-4401) 24-hour cafe and truck stop; Blue plate lunches, BBQ pork and homemade pies keep the loyals coming back for more!

Described as a
legendary BBQ restaurant

Absolutely!! I go out of my way to go to Twix N Tween whenever I'm down Alabama Way (I'm in DC).

Twix n Tween in Centerville is no longer cooking on site, but the pork was as good as ever the last time I was there. April 2007

having spent the last two weeks traveling on interstates between campgrounds and rural towns, I can assure you that there's plenty of variety there as well. Yes, there's a Wal-Mart in Centreville, AL. But there's also the Twix-N-Tween, which has some of the best barbecue in the southeast. 2004

Now I'm hungry.

Y'all have fun. When you paddle through Centreville, I belive that there's a park on your left where you can stop. Cross the river bridge to "Four Points" and enjoy some barbeque at "Twix n Tween".

Cheers,

It was really nice paddling with y’all despite the buzz kill of Tom’s misfortune. It could have happened to more than one of us and Tom took it for us all this time. More on it later, once I’ve had a chance to compose my thoughts.

I'm going to needle Tom into writing about this drama so that we can deal with this sort of thing responsibly. I'll also set up some email alerts on Craigslist and ebay in case someone sells a mango-colored Tsunami in the next year...

Please, please, please send me your trip reports and links to your photo's (or share your thoughts below!) so that all of these experiences can be enjoyed vicariously by others.

Well it looks like I can't embed more than one slideshow in a post (which makes sense. Imagine loading a page of 30 slideshows!) so I'll post a link to my photo's instead.

The photo's are unfiltered so you may wonder why I bothered taking that shot at all... Many of the shots are for use on Google Earth and will probably be deleted from the public album (how many creeks and bridges do you want to see?), but hopefully they'll inspire the participants to upload and share their pictures! I can help with that if you need guidance!

See y'all soon.
Cheers.

Thanks everyone for going on the trip. River trips are what they are -river trips.

On Saturday the weather was beautiful. We got muddy and then we got washed off. What more could you ask for? When I look back maybe we should have stopped after the wild water-works. At least Tom would have his kayak and gear.

I can't express the pain I feel for Tom's loss but I will do my best to catch the vandals. Unfortunately this incident happened but let's not let it be in vain. Remember this valuable lesson and practice safeguards in the future.

I have taken a shower; clothes are in the washer; some gear was hose washed and is hanging everywhere to dry; the rest was toweled off so my bathroom is a little cluttered. I'll write a trip report tonight and send it to Chris tomorrow to post on the website.

Follow the link on my slideshow below to see the larger versions of these pictures...

Would love to read the journals of some of your trips.
Googled some stuff and ran across a "tease" about Clifton Ferry
and the "Mack". Met him once, "unforgetable"
Will these journals be available to read in the future?

Richard Harvey from the Welsh Canoeing Association said he could not comment on the group involved, the locality or the legality of their activity.

"We encourage people to paddle responsibly and in the realm of the law," he said.

Apparently, speeds of 45mph as they sped down the 1:3 gradient! If it went balls up, you'd have a bumpy ride to the bottom!

In my search for royalty-free, kayak-related images to use on Richard's blog, I came across a story posted in a British newspaper which talked about shark fishing from a kayak.
The Terms of Service (TOS), of the newspaper's web site specifically stated:

You may not provide a link to this web site from any other web site without first obtaining Associated's prior written consent.

I don't lick stamps, but I'm not a thief.

This search link may share the risk of death shark fishing from a kayak joy...

Of course, that search revives Thomas Peschak's awesome picture of a great white trailing a kayaker in South Africa....

Whenever I see images like these I always try to judge my reaction should I find myself in similar circumstances. That's a smaller shark. It's only 4m long! Mass-wise, a curious nudge from this thing against my 40lb kayak + self < 145lbs, would send me flying! Looked like a nice day for it, though.

I wonder if the rudder-up was sending a mixed signal because it looks like it's wagging its tail?
